What You Need to Know
Sharon Msiza, also known as MaritimeBae, is an admitted attorney of the High Court of the Republic of South Africa. She is a Maritime Law Practitioner at a boutique law firm where she serves as an Associate with exposure into Maritime Transport, Shipping and Logistics as well as general Corporate Commercial. She holds a Bachelor of Laws (cum laude) from The University of the Witwatersrand and a Master of Laws (in Shipping Law) from The University of Cape Town.
Sharon served her Articles of Clerkship at one of the largest law firms in Africa for a period of two years in their Shipping and Logistics department where she acquired a number of transferrable skills and exposure into both national and international legislative frameworks regulating the maritime industry.
She has interacted with various industry leaders in the Maritime sector working in various institutions including the Department of Transport: Maritime Transport Policy division, the South African Maritime Safety Authority as well as the Ports Regulator of South Africa. As a result of these interactions, Sharon has gained a greater understanding of the regulatory role the government and its various agencies play in the industry as well as how Maritime education is to the development of this industry.
In addition to practice, Sharon’s passion for teaching and transferring knowledge is evidenced by the initiative she started developing an educational series on Maritime Law called 'Maritime Mondays'. This educational series is what gives birth to this website. She writes a piece on a particular Maritime Law related concept, term, or practice, and publishes it on her social media platform. These will now be accessible on this website under the ‘Articles’ section in a revised and more detailed form, you can now make a short trip there and start indulging.
The objective is to raise awareness, particularly to the historically disadvantaged youth of South Africa, on other economic opportunities within the maritime sector that they can pursue, as well as to share information on laws and practices applicable in this industry.
Sharon intends on inspiring more women to penetrate the industry and establish industry presence because so far only an estimated 2% of women make up the world’s maritime workforce. As the greatest advocate for women empowerment, Sharon believes women need to occupy positions that were previously reserved strictly for men and showcase their capabilities and that excellence knows no gender.
In addition to the educational series, Sharon has partnered with a Professor of International Maritime Business from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy in the United States of America to co-find what they call ‘Maritime Law Podcasts’ where they discuss everything ocean-related; more information regarding the podcasts will be uploaded under the ‘Maritime Updates’ section.
She also founded Maritime Bae with the intention to invite others in her world of maritime law. Take some time to explore the blog, read something interesting, and feel free to reach out.
Come, let’s sail on the ocean of knowledge.
